Banks

A bank is a financial institution licensed to accept deposits from customers and make loans to the public. History of banking has been traced to ancient times, as far back as 2000 BC in Babylonia and Assyria. The origin of banks - close to as we know them today - is traced back to Renaissance Italy in places like Florence, Genoa, Venice and Siena. The word "bank" was derived from the Middle French word "banque," whose origin has also been traced to Old Italian and Old High German.

Banks are probably most important to the economy because of their ability to create credit. Their lending activities may be carried out directly to consumers and businesses or indirectly through the capital markets. In addition to receiving deposits and making loans, these institutions may also provide several other services. These include currency exchange, wealth management and provision of safe deposit boxes. Banks are broadly divided into two types: retail/commercial banks and investment banks.

Retail/Commercial banks - These are financial institutions whose business involves receiving deposits and managing withdrawals. They also make short-term loans available to small businesses and individuals. Bank of America is an example of a retail/commercial bank.

Investment banks - These are banks whose activities relate to the financial markets. They provide services to corporate bodies, including merger/acquisition assistance and underwriting. An example is Morgan Stanley.

Banks in a country are regulated by a central bank, such as the U.S. Federal Reserve.
