Bars
A bar is an establishment licensed to serve alcoholic beverages, such as liquor, beer, wine and cocktails. It may also serve customers non-alcoholic beverages such as soft drinks. While bars are mostly set up to provide beverages, some may also offer food from a menu. They are set up with counters and stools or chairs and tables where clients are served, while some form of entertainment, such as live music, may also be provided. The term "bar" is also applied to the area with a countertop and stools for serving drinks.
Public drinking places are believed to have always existed throughout human history. The names used to describe them have only differed. Similar settings had been known by such names as a "tavern" or a "saloon" in the past. However, there has been prohibition on bars in some places in the past. Finland, Iceland and the United States were some of the countries where sale and/or consumption of alcohol were banned in the 20th century. There are still bans on sale of alcoholic drinks today in some places, especially in Muslim countries.
There are different types of bars. They may be classed based on targeted patrons (e.g. gay bar), drink served (e.g. beer bar), or entertainment offered (e.g. dance bar). A bar is sometimes distinguished from a pub on the basis that the former offers larger drink selections while the latter provides wider menu options.
