Manicuring

Manicure is one of the most demanded treatments in a beauty salon. It is a cosmetic treatment of the hands and the fingernails. Manicurists clean and beautify the fingernails through a variety of interventions, including filling and shaping, clipping of non-living tissues, and application of nail polish. Services provided include application of artificial nails or acrylics and designing of the nails. Similar treatments for the feet and toenails are described as pedicures.

The word “manicure” is derived from the French word “manicure,” whose own origin is traced to combination of the Latin terms “manus” and “cura” translated as meaning “care of the hands.” The tools and supplies of the trade include nail file, scissors, brush, buffer, polish and polish removers. Others include cuticle remover, nail art brushes, cuticle clippers and manicure bath. Considering the nature of tools that are used, risk of infections has been a major concern in manicuring. One way nail salons in the United States work around this is by making personal tool kits available for purchase by clients.

It is required in many states for manicurists to complete an approved nail technician or cosmetology program. They must also pass state examinations for licensure. Manicurists and pedicurists jobs are expected to grow by above-average 10 percent between 2014 and 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
